Would you use granules if they contained asbestos? This is what the biggest granule manufacturer says...

Clay granules are widely used across UK industry as a cheap way of dealing with oil spills. However, recent information has come to light that questions whether these materials should be allowed in our factories and workshops, as they are now known to contain an asbestos-like material.

It is now being revealed by manufacturers, that these granules contain a highly dangerous material known as crystalline silica. Silica has a high potential to cause lung disease in humans, so much so that HSE place an exposure limit of one ten thousandth of a gram per 1000 litres of air.

Why is crystalline silica considered to be so dangerous?

Crystalline silica bears a chilling resemblance to asbestos. Although chemically entirely different, both materials can be inhaled and lodge in the tiniest airways of the lungs, where they may sit for 10 years or more before becoming active. Just as asbestos has a disease (asbestosis) named after it, silica has one too (silicosis).

Both are fatal.

Happily, there is a safe alternative. Spill Hound is 100% silica-free and cleans up spills in seconds.
